Papers and photographs, 1917-1919.

Papers and photographs relating to Frank O'Brien (Avoca, Wisconsin), an MIA from World War I, and the discovery of his death in combat by a regimental chaplain. Collection contains a postcard O'Brien wrote to his mother in 1917, letter that chaplain Walter Ames of the 128th Infantry Regiment wrote to inform O'Brien's parents of the circumstances of their son's death, certificate of death, photographs, photographic postcard, and some hand-written genealogical notes about O'Brien. Addressed to his sister Isabella, the photographic postcard of O'Brien in full military attire contains a message on the back about the weather in Texas. One photograph is a formal portrait of O'Brien in civilian clothes. The other photograph is an undated formal studio portrait of Chaplain Walfred Lindstrom (Spencerville, Indiana) in his chaplain's uniform taken by Jefferson Studio of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Lindstrom was the man who found O'Brien's body. Included is a news clipping that relates his discovery of O'Brien. Frank O'Brien served with Company A of the 128th Infantry Regiment, which was part of the famed 32nd Infantry Division (the Red Arrow Division). He enlisted into the army in November 1917, and served until his death in combat, which occurred on August 29, 1918 in France.
